Spring is here and it's time again for the Stanley Park Ecology Society's Discovery Walk Series to host my ongoing series of lectures about insects, ecology and evolution. Join me, Andrew Scott, on May 15th at 1:30 pm at Stanley Park Nature House for Insects: Our Friends, Our Foes. We will discuss the complex relationship between humans and insects, focusing on the ways in which insects affect human activities for both good and bad. Admittance contributes to the Stanley Park Ecology Society and it's nature programs.

Danish industrial project Transistor6 asked if they could use images of my work for their upcoming release, Virgin Venom. My original photograph was incorperated into an environment using Photoshop, and I think the result is very effective, and also considerably more disturbing than the original work on its own. It's nice to know that the freaks in Denmark will have a chance to appreciate my sculpture.

You won’t find Geoff Berner schmoozing with secretaries in a brokerage office any time soon, not for lack of ability mind you, but boozing it up with a bundle of catchy klezmer-accordion and punk-lyric drinking songs, he’ll insure your hangover and a semi-damned good time. Last night at the Biltmore Cabaret, Geoff Berner released his CD “Klezmer Mongrels”, the third album in his “Whiskey Rabbi Trilogy”. Eventually, everybody had fun.

Opening for Geoff Berner was the Vancouver-based industrial noise project “Whip of the UFO”. It’s a one man band of Andrew Scott playing such Weapons of Mass-Destruction as a fibre optic frequency tester, a tangled network of synth pads, and modified toys like a f.u.b.a.r. Furby and children’s vocal distorters. He acquires gear bits with his toy-store employee discount and hacks them up with mad-science. It was noise. It was industrial. Many people listened with their hands over their ears. One concerned, beer-carrying patron actually went up to him and asked him to “Please stop!” The Whip was un-phased as he continued to beam down such industrial labour ballads from the machines’ perspective as “Your Head Asplode.” Geoff Berner could be seen tapping his foot through the set. He seemed to be waving his middle finger at his lyrics and melody-loving community of support. I guess that’s where the “punk” in “klezmer punk” comes in.

Geoff Berner was up second in a three act show. People started jumping when his trio started off with their high-energy “Get Them Drunk and Dancing”. A small group of dancers dedicated to fun danced the whole show, but for the most part, people stood sipping beers and listening to his catchy, racy, cabaret style tunes. In his song “Half-German Girlfriend” he puts out the line “Half of German culture is sublime; and we’ll breed out all the rest in time.” He manages to pull off shocking lyrics with admirable charm. He’s an effective singer, not the best; with Diona Davies shredding violin with wild abandon and Wayne Adams on djembe and kit percussion, his band sound is fun; but it’s his lyrics that sink in strongly. With songs like “Lucky Goddamn Jew” and “Whiskey Rabbi” the crowd was singing along, and even more so with his “official anthem” for the 2010 Olympics. In the catchiest anti-Olympic drinking song ever, with clear and precise lyrics Berner explains that funding for the Olympic building project was acquired by cutting social spending. In particular, funding was cut from the investigation of children’s deaths in Canada. Then he blasts you with the chorus: “The dead, dead children were worth it! (3 times) The Vancouver-Whistler Olympic Games!” Berner is offering this song as a free download on his website because apparently he believes, like I do, that everyone should have it.

The Joey Only Outlaw Band closed the night. Their first three songs were interesting: a folk song with images from the holocaust sung by Mr. Joey Only, a dark original called “Faerie Music” by the fiddler Jeff Andrew, and a cover by Rowan Lipkovitz of (audience member) Al Mader’s macabre cult classic “Dead Man’s Pants”. Then the set disintegrated into generic bar-band country-rock. The band has potential. They can keep people swinging from side to side, but they

haven’t yet learned how to hold the interest of music lovers.

On Friday, February 27th, at 9:00 pm, here in Vancouver British Columbia, the Biltmore Cabaret will be hosting the CD release for Geoff Berner's latest recorded offering, Klezmer Mongrels, and Geoff, even after hearing me play for a previous CD release of his, is actually having me back out to open for his show, performing a spot of solo improvised electronic noise as the Whip of the UFO. So come on down and watch a bunch of folks who just wanna hear some soulful and slyly sarchastic, whiskey fuled accordian driven madness get all antsy and put in earplugs when i sonicly attempt to breach the thin veil between this universe and the universe of chaos that lurks all around us, waiting to break through.

Bloopwatch.org has recently posted links to my C'thulhu related images here at Bug Factory. Bloopwatch is a fine site dedicated to the Lovecraftian implications of a baffling, under water sonic enigma known as "Bloop". The sound was detected by the NOAA using deep sea hydrophones designed to detect submarine activity, and was heard simultaneously by detectors thousands of miles apart. Data suggests that the sound was of biological origin, fueling serious speculation among scientists about huge, unknown creatures lurking in the Pacific Ocean. I personally love this kind of thing, so I'm glad to be associated with bloopwatch.org.

I've completed a new sculpture. It is a donation for a silent auction to benefit my good friend Lawrence Anthony, who had a stroke recently. All of the proceeds will got to support him and his wife, both of whom are adjusting to this recent development. For more information about the event, follow this link. The bidding for this piece starts at $150, considerably less than the six hundred bucks I'd ask for if this were a straight sale. Hopefully it will go for more than $150, but I wanted to make sure it would be affordable to somebody there, ensuring that there will be at least that much money for the cause. I'll be speaking about insects' roles as the architects of the natural world as we know it, describing the pivotal ways in which they have influenced the success or failure of other organisms. I will also address some of the amazing ways in which some insects transform their immediate surroundings into comfortable cities. The walk starts at 1:00 on Sunday, May 18th and lasts for two hours. Rejected Nightmare

When I was working on my friend Michel Gagne's Insanely Twisted Shadow Puppets, some of the shorts were seriously modified from their original conception. One short that was changed was the "Nightmare". Initially, it was quite bleak, featuring a screaming child who is cornered by a tentacled monster. My poor girlfriend had to endure three days of sobbing, crying and yelling as I pieced together prerecorded sounds purchased from an online archive. When the completed track was played for the network we were working for, they were horrified by the stark terror it communicated, and rejected it as being inappropriate for the target audience. I was happy to have produced sounds so horrifying that they were seen as too scary for Halloween programming. Eventually we came up with another version (where the kid is changed to an alien that escapes in a rocket from the tentacled monster) which was used on TV.

It looks like somebody liked the rejected version enough to create an animatic based on Michel's original storyboard designs and my creepy soundtrack. So here it is, as featured at gagneint.com:

I'm sure you can see why this didn't end up playing repeatedly for millions of kids on the Saturday morning cartoon lineup. I still find it to be quite unsettling...

This bee managed to escape from one spider's web, into another, then another, without getting caught!!! I had to snap a couple shots, 'cause the action was too intense! The bee's rapid movement prevented any of the spiders from successfully biting it, and its sheer strength allowed to escape from the spiders' webs. As soon as it got outside (with a bit of my help), it landed hungrily on one of my flowers for some nectar: a well-deserved meal for an amazing adventurer!

Beetle Repair Dept.

I just finished repairing a rather large specimen of Chalcosoma caucasus. It belongs to my good friend Michel Gagne, and was a gift to him from his brother in Quebec. When it originally arrived at Michel's place, it was slightly damaged, having partially lost three of its legs and its wing covers (elytra). After reattaching each leg and elytron, this critter is especially impressive, and it would probably really freak me out if it were crawling, or worse, flying through my living room, which is saying a lot. It was nice having this thing around for a while.

I've posted a new song at MySpace. The song was created using only the sounds gathered live from an outdoor festival on Commercial Drive, then processed, edited and compiled in my computer. I finished the song within 24 hours of gathering the source material.

an improvised set of experimental noise at the cobalt's fake jazz wednesdays($5). With

LSDJ, Aerosol Constellations and Mediocre Pain. I think earplugs are available on site.

when she bought me a raw, 2 kilo hunk of PVC gel about 13 years ago in Quebec.

Animal Voices

I will be interviewed briefly on CFRO 102.7, on Co-op radio's Animal Voices program at around 12:00 noon on Friday, March 16th. We will be discussing the impact of recent storm damage at Stanley Park, it's effect on animal populations, and how humans are coping with cleaning up fallen debris.

I recently contributed the sound for a short looping logo that will be used for an upcoming animation showcase called MixOmation. The music is epic and orchestral, a bit of a departure from my usual musical offerings. I think it conveys the energy of my other pieces, and it works well with the amazing visuals created by my friend, master animator, Michel Gagne. Recently I became part of concrete cutter. Our first show was a tooth-rattling suffusion of chaotic intrusion from the cosmos; music from The Homeworld. Someone in the audience said it "...was beautiful". Our web page doesn't quite capture our live sound, although all the songs there are live recordings. We'll probably play another show, so I'll post future gig listings here, and here, and probably here.
